Project

Sand Quarry Biodiversity Constraints, Old Northern Road Maroota

Environmental support for a State Significant extractive industries proposal at Maroota, planned around large areas of retained vegetation and threatened species habitat.

Location
Maroota, NSW
Sandstone escarpment with eucalypt bushland on a NSW development site surveyed by ESEAPair of Gang-gang Cockatoos at a tree hollow, a threatened species recorded during an ESEA fauna survey in NSW

ESEA is supporting a State Significant extractive industries proposal on Old Northern Road at Maroota, where the project has been planned around large areas of retained vegetation and threatened species habitat.

What is ESEA’s role?

ESEA’s environmental work addresses the biodiversity and riparian constraints of the site while helping facilitate the proposed quarry development without unnecessary impacts to the surrounding vegetated areas. See biodiversity and ecological assessments and targeted species surveys.

Why plan around retained habitat?

On a State Significant proposal, the extent of vegetation retained shapes the assessment, the offset obligation and the conditions that follow. Planning the extraction footprint around the retained vegetation and habitat from the start means the assessment documents a design that already avoids those areas, rather than trying to justify impacts after the layout is fixed.

For how avoidance and offsetting are treated under the amended scheme, see what changed in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme on 7 March 2025.

Tell us about the site and the proposed footprint. We will identify the biodiversity and riparian constraints early so the design can avoid them.
